PHD STUDENTSHIP AT MRC LABORATORY OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY UK 2011

project title: Molecular Neurobiology of Circadian Timekeeping. Applications invited from EU & UK nationals for a fully funded 3-year PhD studentship under the supervision of Dr Michael Hastings FRS.

The aim of this project is to investigate the role of Cryptochrome proteins in the circadian timing machinery of mammals. Particular emphasis will be placed on their putative role as magnetoreceptors. Techniques to be applied include real-time bioluminescent and fluorescent imaging of circadian gene expression, cell and brain slice organotypic culture, recombinant protein biochemistry, targetted mutagenesis, virally mediated, optogenetic control of cellular
activity, and proteomic analysis of circadian transcriptional complexes. How do Cryptochrome proteins behave within the cell over the 24 hour circadian cycle, what is their role in transcriptional regulation and how are their functions affected by magnetic fields?

The position will suit an industrious, highly motivated molecular neurobiologist/ biochemist with a track record of academic excellence. The successful applicant will work within an internationally renowned research group, headed by Dr Michael Hastings FRS, investigating various aspects of circadian timekeeping. The group is supported by the world-class facilities of MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. As a PhD student at LMB, the student will also become a member of a Cambridge College and be registered at the University of Cambridge.

PHD POSITION IN BIOPHYSICS 2011 AT UNIV KLN GERMANY 2011

Universitt zu Kln. Bacteria can acquire genetic diversity including antibiotic resistance and virulence traits by horizontal gene transfer. In particular, many bacteria are naturally competent for DNA transformation in which bacteria import naked DNA from their environment.
PhD position in Germany 2011

Although the proteins that are required for DNA import are mostly known, the molecular mechanism of DNA import is unclear. We designed and tested laser tweezers for studying dynamics and force generation of individual molecular motors in living bacteria in different model bacteria. In future studies we want to implement methods of statistical physics for addressing the molecular mechanism of DNA transport through the bacterial cell envelope in the human pathogen Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

We are currently recruiting a physicist (master or diploma in physics) with background in biophysics. He / she should be interested both in improving the laser tweezers (hardware and algorithms for analysis) and designing approaches to decipher the molecular mechanics of DNA import by bacteria at the single molecule level.
Methods: laser tweezers, single molecule fluorescence microscopy, microbiological methods

Start 1.06.2011 or later (E13, 65%)
Disabled individuals with equal personal and technical eligibility will be favored. The WWU is commited to increasing the ratio of women in research. Women are therefore invited to apply for this position.

PHD SCHOLARSHIPS IN NEUROBIOLOGY AT QUEENSLAND BRAIN INSTITUTE AUSTRALIA 2011

Brain cells: neurons can reach astonishing shapes and dimensions with dendrites and nerve terminals sometimes located meters away. PhD Scholarships in Australia 2011

The establishment and maintenance of such polarity is achieved through the traffic and transport of vesicular compartments. These vesicles, which have various origins and defined destinations, underpin fundamental functions such as neuronal communication through the timely release of neurotransmitter at the synapse. They can also be destined for retrograde transport, carrying many important survival factors from the synapse back to the cell body.

Our ARC and NHMRC funded laboratory is using new fluorescent probes and state-of-the-art live cell microscopy, in combination with biochemistry and mass spectrometry, to understand the molecular mechanisms underpinning neuronal membrane trafficking.

3 PhD scholarships are being offered:

SCHOLARSHIP TIPS

There is no magic formula for applying for and receiving a scholarship. But these tips can start you on the right foot.

  • Be organized. Stay on top of deadlines, gather all pertinent documents, and make copies of everything you submit. It is a good idea to send your applications by certified mail to ensure receipt.
  • Be honest. Don't exaggerate your grades, memberships, skills, or qualifications. It is better to focus on the scholarships for which you might be eligible.
  • Follow instructions carefully. Some scholarships require you to write an essay; others may want letters of recommendation. Send in what is requested and proofread everything. Typos and missing materials can cost you a scholarship.
  • Proofread your application: Review everything. Typos are a sure way not to be considered for a scholarship. Consider asking a parent, teacher, or friend to read your application.
  • Keep copies of everything you send: If your application is misplaced, having copies will make it easier to resend your information quickly.
  • Send your application packet by registered mail: Many sources offering scholarships will not confirm receipt of your application. Consider sending your application via USPS registered mail so you know your materials arrived safely.
