The Health Information Systems Research Centre (HISRC) based in University College Cork (UCC), Ireland, is seeking applications for a 3-year Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) sponsored PhD studentship position at UCC

Description

The HISRC (http://hisrc.ucc.ie) is a multidisciplinary centre, building on the growing synergy between Information Systems (IS), electronic technology and healthcare, to become the leading research centre of its type in the country. Translational research within the HISRC investigates how technology integration, social factors, organisational structures and business processes affect healthcare services and delivery. These technologies can be used for chronic and acute care by medical professionals in all sectors from primary to tertiary healthcare, with the aim of significantly improving patient outcomes.

Remote monitoring of patient well-being is an area that is gaining national and international attention within in the research community and with related industry leaders such as Philips and Intel. However the decision making aspects associated with the collected data are less obvious and thus under developed. Therefore, having the ability to couple a decision support system (DSS) with wireless monitoring provides a major extension of system capability and a significant advance in patient care.

The candidate should have (or be about to obtain) a good honours degree in Information Systems/Information Technology or other related subject areas. Knowledge of Decision Support Systems (DSS) and database architectures would be an advantage. The candidate will be expected to investigate how, automated patient monitoring can be leveraged to adequately support relevant Decision Support Systems in assisting medical staff deliver high quality patient care. This project seeks to address various research topics by investigating the use of wireless monitoring of patients vital-signs and the reporting of summary datasets.

The emphasis in both programs is on development of the intellectual and technical skills necessary for independent research. The main component of both degrees is a thesis embodying the results of original research. Scholarships are limited, and are awarded on the basis of academic merit. Such awards benefit both students and supervisors (who can thereby allocate more money for research expenses), therefore prospective and current McGill graduate students are expected to apply for all scholarships for which they are eligible. Prospective students should note that separate applications must be made for graduate school admission and scholarship support. Possession of a scholarship increases the probability of acceptance. Many scholarships require Canadian citizenship or Landed Immigrant status. Applications received by February 1st will be automatically considered for a number of McGill-administered fellowships.
Eligibility:
  • Applicants must have a B.Sc. in a discipline relevant to the proposed field of study with an overall Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0/4.0 or a CGPA of 3.2/4.0 for the last 2 fulltime academic years of study

Each work program represents the topic of one doctoral thesis.
will be part of the first work program, which targets to improve the understanding and quantification of biogenic production of methylated Se and S in the marine and terrestrial environment. Marine environments are presumed to be a major natural source of Se to the atmosphere. Also in terrestrial environments such as in peatbogs, selenium can be transformed into highly volatile methylated Se compounds that are emitted into the atmosphere. Nevertheless, the processes leading to formation of marine and terrestrial atmospheric selenium compounds are still largely unknown and need to be understood.

PHD RESEARCH STUDENTSHIP FROM SCIENCE FOUNDATION IRELAND AT NUI GALWAY IRELAND 2011

4-Year Funded PhD Research Studentship in Biomedical Fluid Dynamics at NUI Galway, Ireland 2011
Study Subject(s):Fluid dynamics in the hinge region of mechanical heart valves.
Course Level: PhD
Scholarship Provider: NUI Galway, Ireland
Scholarship can be taken at:Ireland

Eligibility:
Applicants should have a first class honours or 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in mechanical, biomedical or aerospace engineering, or a related discipline. Relevant experimental experience and a strong interest in fluid dynamics are desirable. An annual stipend of 18,000 will be paid, in addition to full university fees.

Scholarship Open for International Students: No

Scholarship Description: A fully funded 4-year PhD studentship is available at NUI Galway, Ireland, for research on fluid dynamics in the hinge region of mechanical heart valves. This scholarship is funded by Science Foundation Ireland through the Research Frontiers Programme, and will be supervised by Dr. Nathan Quinlan. Mechanical heart valves (MHVs) have been highly successful in giving relief from life-threatening heart valve disease. However, they are associated with elevated risk of haemolysis, thrombosis, and thromboembolism. Valve hinges are believed to be critical sites for thrombus formation because of the unnatural fluid dynamics that occur there, with resultant high stress on cells. Better valve design will require a deep understanding of fluid mechanics in and around the hinge. At NUI Galway we have developed a unique approach in which valve flow is scaled up and slowed down (while preserving correct physics) to enable enhanced measurement of the small and rapidly evolving flow structures which occur in turbulent flow and may interact directly (and harmfully) with blood cells. We have already successfully used this system to measure (with particle image velocimetry) the flow downstream of the open valve at unprecedented resolution. In the present project, we will extend this approach to an investigation of hinge flow. In particular, we aim to determine whether the flow is truly turbulent inside the hinge, and if so to characterise and quantify the turbulence and the resulting stresses experienced by cells. These results may lead to innovative valve designs.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MASTERS AND PHD STUDENTS FROM MCGILL UNIVERSITY CANADA 2011

Scholarship for Masters and PhD Students in Biology at McGill University, Canada
Study Subject(s):Ecology, Biodiversity and Conservation, Evolution, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Cell and Developmental Biology, Neurobiology, Plant Biology and Bioinformatics.
Course Level:Masters and PhD
Scholarship Provider: McGill University,Canada
Scholarship can be taken at: Canada

Eligibility:
  • Applicants must have a B.Sc. in a discipline relevant to the proposed field of study with an overall Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0/4.0 or a CGPA of 3.2/4.0 for the last 2 fulltime academic years of study
  • Applicants should also have adequate background knowledge in cell and molecular biology (or biochemistry), organismal biology, ecology, developmental biology and statistics
  • Students are admitted into the program on a full-time basis only

Scholarship Open for International Students: Yes

Scholarship Description: The Department offers graduate training in many areas of biology with particular strengths in Ecology, Biodiversity and Conservation, Evolution, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Cell and Developmental Biology, Neurobiology, Plant Biology and Bioinformatics. Graduate programs leading to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees are offered.

How to Apply: Online

Scholarship Application Deadline:
  • International students: January 15th for September registration August 15th for January registration
  • Canadian residents and citizens: March 15th for September registration October 15th for January registration
