PHD POSITION AT ECARES AND DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS UNIVERSIT LIBRE DE BRUXELLES 2011

PhD PositionECARES and Department of Mathematics, Universit libre de Bruxelles
To start October 1, 2011 (or as soon as possible after that date)

Description: This PhD position is related to a research project entitled Statistical methods for complex and dynamical dependence models, for which the promotors are Catherine Dehon, Siegfried Hoermann, and Davy Paindaveine.

A possible topic that we suggest is related to functional time series analysis. Functional data analysis is concerned with the statistical analysis of (random) curves or surfaces. Often they are obtained by separating an almost continuous time record into natural consecutive intervals, e.g. days. Examples include daily curves of financial transaction data, daily patterns of geophysical or environmental data, etc. If data are collected sequentially over time, it is natural to expect that the current observation depends to some degree on the previous observations. The apparent presence of temporal dependence has motivated the development of appropriate time series models in functional data literature. The purpose of this project is an in-depth study of functional time series beyond existing linear models.

Duration: 4 years.

Requirements: Students with a masters degree in mathematics, statistics, or econometrics are invited to apply. A very good background and interest in either statistics, time series or probability is preferable.

Application: A full application consists of:
  1. a detailed CV,
  2. a statement of motivation,
  3. 2 reference letters,
  4. degree certificates and grade transcripts.
The application deadline is April 30, 2011. We encourage, however, to apply as soon as possible, since we might fill the position at an earlier stage.

Please, submit your application via email to Siegfried Hoermann shormann@ulb.ac.be

POSTDOC POSITIONS AUTOMOTIVE AT CEA RESEARCH CENTER NEAR PARIS 2011

The laboratory LISE (Model Driven Engineering Laboratory for embedded and real-time systems), part of the CEA LIST (450 researchers in the field of software-intensive systems, see
http://www-list.cea.fr/gb/index_gb.htm) has an open position for a research assistant.

The laboratory offers a creative international environment, a possibility to conduct highly competitive research on a global scale and involvement in teaching. There are plenty of opportunities to cooperate with national and international partners. The lab is responsible, within CEA LIST, for research activities related to methods and tools for the development of real-time embedded systems. In this scope, one of the prevailing themes of the laboratory is the application of model-driven approaches to real-time embedded systems development. The lab has a recognized expertise in this field, both on the academic and industrial side. We participate in numerous European and national research projects (Artist2, Atesst, OPEES, CESAR, VERDE), have steady and close relations with some major actors of the domain, and are strongly involved in international standardisation bodies like the Object

Management Group we were for instance responsible for a major part of the UML profile MARTE dedicated to real-time and embedded systems modelling and analysis (www.omgmarte.org).

In the context of a joint project with Fraunhofer ESK in Munich (Germany), the lab seeks to study self-adaptive systems in the context of automotive applications. We want to use a component-oriented approach that embeddeds (self-) descriptions of the components and their interconnections, i.e. a kind of architecture model at runtime. Because existing design methodologies are not sufficient to design self-adaptive software systems, the objective of the project is the creation of an
interactive design methodology for these systems based on UML and the profile MARTE. The latter is used in particular to specify non-functional requirements related for instance to timing and performance requirements. Performance estimations are obtained by simulating the (timing) behavior before the system is deployed on the real target.

The position is funded for a period of 1 year with the option to extend the period by another year.

The candidate must hold a PhD or equivalent with top performance in a field that is closely related to computer science. He should have a good background in software engineering, modeling and/or the embedded and real-time domain.

Applications shall be sent by e-mail to ansgar.radermacher@cea.fr or
postal mail to

Ansgar Radermacher
CEA Saclay
91191 Gif-sur-Yvette cedex

Applications have to contain detailed experience and background
information and should contain a letter of recommendation.

PHD IN UMC NETHERLANDS 2011

Vacancies PhD Student m/f
Vacancy number 2011/0090
Department
Julius Center

Your profile
We are looking for someone who has (nearly) finished a master of science program (MSc) in which statistics, mathematics, or computer science play a prominent role. Experience with programming and data analysis techniques is an advantage, as well as experience with statistical software such as R, S-Plus, Mathematica or WinBUGS. Good communication skills are required, as well as in interest in methodological research within the field of clinical epidemiology and health economics.

Your position
The research section Theoretical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts studies aiming to improve existing and to develop new methods for design and analysis of (clinical) epidemiological studies. The section focuses on the following themes: Developing innovative designs for diagnostic and prognostic (prediction) research, Developing innovative methods for quantifying the true or added value of (new) diagnostic and prognostic tests in a multivariable clinical context, Developing innovative methods for the validation and updating of so-called clinical prediction rules, Testing and improving sophisticated methods for dealing with missing values in epidemiologic research, Investigating innovative methods for meta-analysis and individual patient data-analysis of etiologic and therapeutic studies, Development of models to combine data from randomised and observational studies including genetic information, for estimating (long term) prognosis according to specific patient characteristics in addition to treatment effects. The research group Medical Technology Assessment conducts studies on the cost-effectiveness of new medical interventions, such as newly developed drugs, new surgical procedures or new screening strategies. Some of the focus areas of this group are: The cost-effectiveness analysis of blood safety measure, Cost-effectiveness of interventions to improve circulatory health, Development of new methods to support model-based cost-effectiveness analyses, Cost-effectiveness analysis of population screening strategies In both groups, the mentioned methodological themes are not only studied on a purely theoretical level, but are also illustrated by using empirical data from various medical disciplines. In collaboration these groups will start a new project on the development of methods to assess the actual added value of implementing new diagnostic tests. Websites: www.juliuscenter.nl
The Theoretical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Medical Technology Assessment groups will collaborate within a new project on the development of methods to assess the actual added value of implementing new diagnostic tests. Clinical prediction rules aim to provide a probability of the presence of a disease (diagnosis) or occurrence of a disease (prognosis) in an individual. The development of such prediction models is becoming increasingly popular, and newly developed diagnostic tests, such as biomarkers, may lead to improved prediction models. However, the evaluation of those prediction models is typically limited to an assessment of their predictive accuracy. As a result, the effects of applying new, or updated, prediction models on actual patient outcomes remain unknown. Within the field of health economics modeling methods have been developed to assess the balance between costs and effects (patient outcomes) for medical interventions. In this project we aim to use and extend these methods for the assessment of the added value of new diagnostic tests. In addition, we aim to develop methods that are able to quantify the effects of replacing an existing prediction model that is used in clinical practice with a new, or updated, prediction model. A new model may provide different risk estimates for patients, for example for cardiovascular disease, compared with the old model. As a result the preferred treatment option may also change for specific patient subgroups, and methods need to be developed to identify these subgroups. We will use statistical methods and simulation models as well as empirical data on the diagnosis deep vein thrombosis, the prognosis of cardiovascular outcomes, and the prognosis of traumatic brain injury. In collaboration with epidemiologists, statisticians and health economists you will investigate methods to assess diagnostic tests in general and clinical prediction rules in particular. Results will be described in scientific papers, and published in international, peer-reviewed journals. Based on the papers you will write a thesis, at the end of the project. For this project a 3-year temporary position is available, starting with a 1-year contract, followed by a 2-year contract when progress is satisfactory. During the project there is an opportunity to do a master of science program in clinical epidemiology. Website: www.msc-epidemiology.eu

The maximum monthly salary for this 100% position is 2673.00 gross on the basis of full-time employment (working week of 36 hours). This is a temporary appointment for 3 jaar.

Details
We are looking for a full-time PhD-candidate. Employment is temporary for a period of 3 years, with an initial contract for one year, and an extension of 2 years if successful. The project will be conducted in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The area of business science has experienced major scientific progress over recent years. In order to be prepared for a successful career in academia, business doctorate students need not only high-quality guidance but also internationally competitive training.

However, most German institutions currently do not offer structured doctoral programs in business science to their students. Striving for excellence and embracing international competition in doctoral education, the Humboldt Graduate School of Business tries to fill this gap. The school follows an open network approach, establishing and maintaining cooperation with leading researchers and institutions, both nationally and internationally. The first intake of doctoral students was 2009, the application deadline for the October 2011 intake is March 31.
