Eligibility: Successful applicants are expected to have a good first degree (at least 2.1, or international equivalent) in Classics and Ancient History or a related discipline, and a Masters degree at Merit/Distinction level, or international equivalent, in Classics and Ancient History or a related discipline. If English is not your native language then you

will also need to satisfy our English language entry requirements.

Scholarship Description: The Department of Classics and Ancient History is offering a fully funded studentship for an exceptional researcher. We are offering: The Leventis studentship for PhD study on the impact of Greek on non-Greek Culture (open both to UK/EU and overseas students): all tuition fees paid for three years. The student will also receive an annual maintenance grant for three years, which we expect to be �13,590 per year.

This studentship is for research on the impact of Greek on non-Greek culture, and forms part of an Initiative funded by the A. G. Leventis Foundation. The PhD research can be on any area or period of ancient culture covered by the research expertise of the Department. Examples of suitable topics could include the influence of ancient medicine/philosophy on the Arabic or Western tradition, or that of the library of Alexandria on Mediterranean culture, or the influence of Greek culture on other peoples in the Black Sea area. The University encourages interdisciplinary research and offers excellent resources for study of cognate areas, e.g. Arabic and Islamic studies, Archaeology, the History of Medicine, Politics. The Initiative also funds a lectureship, held by Dr Myrto Hatzimichali, whose work focuses on ancient libraries and scholarship, and an international conference on the impact of Greek on non-Greek culture is planned for 2013.
