Eligibility:
  • The candidate will be qualified to degree level (1st or 2i) in Physics (with an emphasis on EM field theory), Microwave Engineering or Microwave/Communication Systems Engineering.
  • The candidate should ideally have an active interest in medicine or biological sciences (it is not a prerequisite to be formally trained in medicine)

Scholarship Description: An offer is made for a research studentship to work towards the degree of Ph.D. in the field of microwave engineering for medical applications. This work is focussed on the novel use of microwave engineering techniques for non-invasive treatment of cancerous lesions within the human body. The research topic will involve propagation of electromagnetic radiation within biological tissue with the aim of treatment of benign and malignant tumours. The aim is to investigate a technique that will operate at microwave frequencies that will have significant advantages over other �conventional� and less palatable treatment systems currently in use.
